How to Set Up Your Camera for FlayrBooth: Webcam, DSLR, GoPro & Phone Camera
FlayrBooth supports four types of cameras. This guide walks through each one — from plugging in a simple USB webcam to connecting a GoPro wirelessly or tethering a DSLR.

Method 1: USB Webcam (Simplest)
Any standard UVC-compatible USB webcam works with FlayrBooth. This includes built-in laptop cameras and external webcams like Logitech, Razer, or Microsoft models.
Setup steps
- 1Plug the webcam into a USB port on your computer. Use USB 3.0 (blue) ports for 1080p or higher.
- 2Open FlayrBooth and press Ctrl+Alt+D (Windows) or Cmd+Alt+D (Mac) to open the operator dashboard.
- 3Go to the Camera tab. Your webcam appears under Camera Source in the camera selector (top-right of the capture screen).
- 4Select your webcam from the list. The live preview updates immediately.
- 5Set Resolution to 1920×1080 (recommended) and Frame Rate to 30 FPS.
- 6Toggle Mirror if you want the preview flipped horizontally (natural for selfie-style setups).
⚠️ Webcam not detected?
- • Check the USB connection — try a different port
- • Close other apps using the camera (Zoom, Teams, Skype, OBS)
- • Restart FlayrBooth
- • Windows: Check Settings → Privacy → Camera → allow apps to access camera
- • macOS: Check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera → allow FlayrBooth

Method 2: DSLR Camera (Best Quality)
FlayrBooth supports Canon and Nikon DSLR cameras via USB tethering for the highest quality photos. The app controls the camera directly — shutter, focus, and live view.
Before you start
- Supported cameras: Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji, Olympus, and Panasonic — plus any camera that supports PTP or WIA tethering over USB.
- Driver: FlayrBooth uses digiCamControl on Windows and gphoto2 on macOS to control DSLRs. These are installed automatically on first use — no manual driver download needed.
- USB cable: Use the camera's original USB cable. A poor-quality cable can cause connection drops.
- Battery: Keep the camera plugged into a power adapter or use a dummy battery. USB tethering drains the battery quickly.
Setup steps
- 1Connect your camera to the computer via USB. Turn the camera ON.
- 2Set the camera to Manual (M) mode on the dial. Auto modes may conflict with FlayrBooth's control.
- 3Open FlayrBooth and go to the capture screen. Click the camera selector button (top-right) and choose DSLR Camera from the list.
- 4If this is your first time, a setup overlay appears — FlayrBooth automatically downloads and installs the tethering driver (digiCamControl on Windows, gphoto2 on macOS). Follow the on-screen instructions.
- 5The live view should appear on screen. If not, check the USB connection and that no other app (EOS Utility, Nikon software) is controlling the camera.
💡 DSLR tips for events:
- • Close EOS Utility or Nikon software — they lock the camera and prevent FlayrBooth from accessing it
- • Disable auto power-off on the camera body (set to max or "disable")
- • Use a dummy battery connected to AC power for all-day events
- • For flash photography, set the camera to manual exposure and use an external flash trigger
Method 3: GoPro WiFi Camera
FlayrBooth supports GoPro HERO5 and newer cameras via WiFi connection (HERO5–8 use the v1 API, HERO9+ use the v2 API). The GoPro connects wirelessly, giving you a live preview and full camera control — shutter, mode switching, and media management.
Manual WiFi Connection (Recommended)
WiFi is the most reliable way to connect your GoPro to FlayrBooth. It provides full camera control — live preview, shutter, mode switching, and media management. This method works with all GoPro models (HERO5+).
- 1Turn on your GoPro and enable WiFi from the camera's settings menu.
- 2In FlayrBooth's Camera tab → GoPro section, click Connect manually.
- 3Click Scan for GoPro Wi-Fi to find nearby GoPro networks.
- 4Enter the WiFi password shown on your GoPro's screen and click Connect.
Bluetooth Pairing (Alternative, HERO9+ Only)
GoPro HERO9 and newer support Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for automatic WiFi setup. Note that Bluetooth pairing can be less reliable than a direct WiFi connection — if you encounter connection issues, use the manual WiFi method above instead.
- 1Open FlayrBooth → Operator Dashboard → Camera tab → GoPro Camera section.
- 2Enable GoPro Camera and click Connect via Bluetooth.
- 3Put your GoPro into pairing mode: press and hold the Mode button until the blue LED blinks rapidly.
- 4Keep the GoPro within 3 metres (10 feet) of the computer. Click Scan for GoPro.
- 5FlayrBooth finds the camera and pairs automatically. Credentials are stored for future reconnections.
⚠️ Important GoPro limitations:
- • Your computer temporarily loses internet access while connected to the GoPro's WiFi network. QR sharing still works on the local network.
- • Keep the GoPro within 10 metres of the computer for reliable WiFi connection
- • USB-connected GoPros have limited functionality — use WiFi for full camera control
- • Bluetooth pairing (BLE) is only available on HERO9 and newer, and can be less reliable than a direct WiFi connection
Auto-reconnection
Once paired, FlayrBooth automatically reconnects to your GoPro using stored credentials every time the dashboard opens. To remove saved credentials, click Forget Device in the GoPro section of the Camera tab.
Method 4: Phone Camera (Wireless)
Turn your iPhone or Android phone into a wireless camera. Both devices must be on the same WiFi network.
Setup steps
- 1In FlayrBooth → Operator Dashboard → Camera tab → Phone Camera section, toggle it on.
- 2A QR code appears on screen. Open your phone's camera app and scan the code.
- 3Tap the link that appears on your phone to open the camera streaming page in your phone's browser.
- 4Tap Allow when the browser asks for camera access. Your phone's camera feed appears in FlayrBooth.
💡 Best for:
The phone camera feature is great as a backup camera, for testing setups without a dedicated webcam, or when you need a second angle. Use a phone tripod for stable hands-free operation.
Bonus: Green Screen & AI Background Removal
Once your camera is set up, you can enable background effects from the Camera tab.
🎯 AI Background Removal (No green screen needed)
- FlayrBooth can remove the background in real-time using AI — no physical green screen required.
- Toggle AI Background Removal in the Camera tab under Background settings.
- Replace the background with a custom image, or set the fallback to black or transparent.
- Works best with good lighting and a clear contrast between the subject and background.
🟢 Green Screen (Chroma Key)
- If you have a physical green backdrop, enable Green Screen mode.
- Replace the green with a background image, or set the fallback to black or transparent.
- Choose a fallback colour (black or transparent) for areas where the background is removed.
Which Camera Should You Choose?
USB Webcam — Best for most operators
Simple, reliable, and affordable. A good 1080p webcam (Logitech C920 or similar) gives excellent results with zero setup hassle. Recommended for 90% of events.
DSLR — Best for premium photo quality
When clients demand the highest quality prints, a tethered DSLR delivers. Requires more setup and accessories (dummy battery, proper cable).
GoPro — Best for wireless and action shots
Perfect for wide-angle shots, slow-motion capture, and setups where running a USB cable is impractical. Note the WiFi internet trade-off.
